It is still hot in Doha.
The kind of heat that doesn't care what the calendar says.
But something shifts in September anyway.
The city fills back up. Traffic returns. The out-of-office replies disappear. Everyone comes back from wherever they went in summer, a little rested, a little restless, talking about plans.
It feels like the year is starting again.
I have always felt this, even as a kid. September meant new notebooks. Fresh pages. A chance to be a slightly better version of whoever I was in June.
I never really grew out of it.
And this year, September feels even more like a beginning, because in a few days I get another year older.
My birthday has always felt like my real new year.
January belongs to everyone. Resolutions, countdowns, fireworks, the whole world deciding to change at once.
September 5 belongs only to me.
Nobody is watching. Nobody expects a speech. It is just a quiet line between who I was last year and who I am about to become.
And lately I have been asking myself what I actually want to carry across that line.
Not in a dramatic way.
I am not trying to reinvent myself.
I just know that every year we carry things forward without checking them.
Old habits. Old fears. Old ways of protecting ourselves that made sense once and quietly stopped making sense. Ways of spending our days that feel productive and lead nowhere in particular. Standards we inherited and never questioned.
We bring all of it into the next year the way you pack a suitcase in a hurry. Everything goes in, because sorting it would take too long.
This year, I want to sort it.
So this month, I am going to slow down and look honestly at what I am bringing with me.
What I built to survive, and whether I still need it. How I spend my time, and whether it is actually taking me somewhere. What I accept, and whether those standards are really mine. And by the end of the month, what I am choosing on purpose.
I don't expect to have perfect answers.
I just want to stop walking into each new year by accident.
If you have ever felt that September pull, the sense that something is ready to begin, I hope you will take this month with me.
You don't need a birthday for it.
You only need to stop for a moment and ask:
What am I carrying into the next chapter of my life, and did I ever actually choose it?
Until the next page, — Miss Joo
